Prof. Dr. Andreas Raabe, MD specializes in brain tumors surgery, aneurysms and spinal diseases. To protect important motor functions during brain surgery, Andreas Raabe has developed a new continuous monitoring method. He has also introduced microscope-integrated video-angiography to neurosurgery for the operation of aneurysms and vascular malformations. For the development of these innovative surgical procedures, he received the prestigious “European Lecture” award from the European Society of Neurosurgery in 2019.

In September 2020, Andreas Raabe together with two scientists from Carl Zeiss Meditec Inc. was nominated for the German Future Prize for the development of an innovative robotic visualization system in neurosurgery.

His professional training and specialization was supplemented and deepened during annual stays at renowned universities abroad. Andreas Raabe is a regular speaker at national and international courses or congresses, especially on topics such as training, surgical techniques, innovations in surgery, aneurysms and brain tumors.

Andreas Raabe is a member of several national and international professional societies and a reviewer for the most important international journalist in the field of neurosurgery. He is also a reviewer for the Swiss National Science Foundation and the German Research Foundation.

Professor Raabe`s list of publications includes more than 360 original papers, reviews or book contributions.

Prof. Dr. med. Kathleen Seidel is a Professor and Senior Attending, for neurosurgery with a focus on tumor surgery and functional monitoring. Intraoperative neurophysiology was already an important part of Kathleen Seidel's clinical and academic work during her training as a specialist in neurosurgery. She has completed several international observerships (e.g. at UCSF in San Francisco, USA, and in Montpellier, France) as well as a fellowship at the Department of Intraoperative Neurophysiology and Neurosurgery under Professor Vedran Deletis in New York, USA.

Kathleen Seidel established the Department of Intraoperative Neurophysiology in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Orthopaedics at Inselspital Bern in 2009 and has headed it ever since. International guest physicians regularly visit her department for IOM, and Kathleen Seidel is routinely invited as a guest speaker for neuromonitoring courses and international congresses. She is the president of the International Society of Neurosurgery (ISIN). She is also actively involved in setting up international neuromonitoring projects in Myanmar and other countries.

Her goal is to strengthen the field of intraoperative neurophysiology and to improve training and quality in order to increase patient safety during high-risk surgery.

Her main area of research is monitoring and mapping technologies in glioma tumor surgery and spinal cord tumors. She has published numerous key papers in these fields and is co-author of an important neuromonitoring book. In 2018, she received the Theodor Kocher Prize from the University of Bern in recognition of her exceptional and promising scientific achievements. In 2019, she was appointed Privatdozentin at the University of Bern and Adjunct Professor at the University of Southern Denmark.

Andreas Nowacki, MD, is a specialist in neurosurgery and has been a senior physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital since 2020.

Andreas Nowacki completed his studies in human medicine in 2013 at the University of Tübingen, Germany. He then continued his training at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital. Fascinated by the possibility of treating diverse diseases of the central nervous system by modulating neuronal networks using electrostimulation, he set his clinical and research focus very early in the field of functional neurosurgery and neuromodulation. In November 2015, he completed his PhD in the field of basic research of complex signaling systems

During a fellowship program accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons in Oxford, UK, in 2018, he was able to further deepen his knowledge in the field of functional neurosurgery and neuromodulation and gain in-depth expertise.

In 2019, Andreas Nowacki passed the specialist examination, and since 2020 he has been a senior physician at Inselspital. In 2023, he completed his habilitation in neurosurgery at the University of Bern.

Andreas Nowacki is a member of the European Association of Functional Neurosurgery. He is also a reviewer of several renowned scientific journals (including NeuroImage, Neuromodulation).

Dr. Fabian Cavalloni is a resident at the University Department of Neurosurgery at the Inselspital Bern. After completing his medical studies at the University of Bern, Fabian Cavalloni gained initial clinical experience in orthopedics at Interlaken Hospital.

He began his residency in neurosurgery in 2018 at the Cantonal Hospital of St. Gallen.
