The operating rooms of the future are being built at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital. They lay the foundation for surgical robots. Chief physician Andreas Raabe is taking it in stride. He has been performing surgery with technical assistance systems and digital images for quite some time.
For the time being, surgeons at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital are still using scalpels, forceps, and clamps. «However, I already rely completely on the three-dimensional images on the screen,» says Chief Physician Andreas Raabe. This allows him to remove a tumor with millimeter precision. If he were to control a robot during surgery using a joystick in the future, he would see no problem with that either. «It's actually like driving a car. There, too, the driver simply operates the power steering, which then performs the steering maneuver.»
