Congratulations on the SNF grant for stroke research at the Bern Neurocenter! The neurosurgery-led team has been awarded CHF 1.9 million for the Space Shield study, which is testing a new surgical approach for patients with severe stroke.
Research grant from the SNF
The research team led by Prof. Philippe Schucht, Prof. Marcel Arnold, Dr. Cédric Karl Kissling, Claire Descombes MSc, and David Hasler MSc has been awarded a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).
The SNSF is providing a total of CHF 1.9 million in funding for their project «Space Shield: A space-expanding shield in decompressive hemicraniectomy for stroke – an international multicenter randomized-controlled phase III trial.»
We congratulate the entire team on this remarkable achievement and wish them every success and exciting insights in the implementation of the project.
What is the Space Shield study about?
The Space Shield study is investigating a new surgical method for patients who have suffered a severe stroke. It involves the use of a specially developed implant («Space Shield») that provides more space for the swollen brain after surgery while immediately protecting the skull again.
Unlike conventional treatment, which requires two procedures, the Space Shield procedure involves only one operation. This could reduce complications and improve patient recovery.
