PD Dr. Johannes Goldberg, Attending Physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, has been awarded the 2023 Albrecht von Haller Young Investigator Award by the Swiss Heart Foundation for his research into aneurysm screening.

Johannes Goldberg's award-winning research project investigates the benefits of screening smokers for brain aneurysms. Aneurysms are balloon-like dilations of a brain artery and do not usually cause any symptoms. However, aneurysms can rupture and cause severe cerebral hemorrhage. Since smoking is the main risk factor for this, this novel screening could make an important contribution to preventing cerebral hemorrhage in this risk group.

The Albrecht von Haller Young Investigator Award is presented annually to young researchers for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of cardiovascular medicine. It serves to promote the academic advancement of young researchers and physicians, thereby improving healthcare for cardiovascular patients. The prize is awarded by the Swiss Heart Foundation and is endowed with CHF 25,000.
