Dr. med. Michael Murek is a board-certified neurosurgeon and has served as an attending physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital Bern since 2017.
After studying human medicine in Salzburg (Austria), he completed his neurosurgical training at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital Bern under the direction of Prof. Andreas Raabe. He further expanded his clinical expertise through rotations at the University Clinic for Intensive Care Medicine at Inselspital Bern and at the Department of Neurosurgery at Geneva University Hospital (HUG). His scientific background was deepened by a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at the renowned Yale University in the United States (Prof. John Geibel).
In addition to his clinical duties, Dr. Murek leads interdisciplinary research projects at the intersection of neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, and digital technology.
His research focuses on deep learning applications in neurosurgical imaging, automated microscope control, and image-based decision support. His work on AI-assisted surgical systems was featured as the cover article in the journal Neurosurgical Focus in 2025. He also works on modeling neurosurgical care using modern statistical approaches, with a focus on causal inference, cost-effectiveness analysis, and predictive modeling relevant to personalized treatment strategies.
Dr. Murek is actively involved in education at all levels and teaches in the Master’s program “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine” at the University of Bern. He is also a co-founder of the scientific software platform Elumity, which integrates digital tools for research, education, and clinical practice.
From 2014 to 2017, Dr. Murek served as President of the Swiss Young Neurosurgeons Society (SYNS), where he was responsible for the planning and coordination of courses and symposia.
Michael Murek is married and the father of two children.
