Dr. Michael Murek is a specialist in neurosurgery and has been an attending physician at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, since 2017. In 2026, he successfully completed his habilitation at the University of Bern.
After studying human medicine in Salzburg (Austria), he completed his specialist training at the Department of Neurosurgery at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital under the supervision of Prof. Andreas Raabe. He also completed an interdisciplinary training year at the Department of Intensive Care Medicine at Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, and a further training stay at the Department of Neurosurgery of the University Hospital of Geneva (HUG). He deepened his scientific training during a one-year research stay as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale University (USA).
In addition to his clinical work, Michael Murek leads interdisciplinary research projects at the interface of neurosurgery, artificial intelligence, and digital technology. His work focuses in particular on deep learning methods in neurosurgical imaging, automated microscope control, and image-based decision support systems. One of his papers on AI-supported assistance systems was honored as the cover publication in the journal Neurosurgical Focus in 2025.
He also works on modeling neurosurgical care using modern statistical methods. His focus is on causal inference, cost-effectiveness analyses, and predictive modeling with the aim of supporting personalized treatment decisions.
Michael Murek is involved in teaching at all levels of education and teaches in the master's program «Artificial Intelligence in Medicine» at the University of Bern. He is also co-founder of the scientific software platform Elumity, which combines digital tools for research, teaching, and clinical practice.
Michael Murek is married and has two children.
