The Insel Group and Swiss Medical Network are entering into a strategic partnership to further develop functional neurosurgery and improve the range of treatments available in the canton of Bern. Thanks to this partnership, patients with specific neurological conditions such as neuropathic pain, essential tremor, or Parkinson's disease will benefit from an innovative, highly precise, and non-invasive treatment method: magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS).

Cooperation between Inselspital and Swiss Medical Network

This partnership marks a significant step forward in the development of neurological care in Switzerland. It combines cutting-edge university medicine, state-of-the-art technology, and consistently patient-centered care.

As part of the collaboration, patients at Inselspital – in the Department of Neurosurgery and the Department of Neurology – will receive care of the highest clinical and scientific standard.

Treatment with MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) will be carried out at the Swiss Medical Network's Medical Center Ostermundigen under the direction of PD Dr. Marc Gallay, an internationally recognized expert in this field.

MR-guided focused ultrasound

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS or HIFU, short for high-intensity focused ultrasound) is a modern functional neurosurgical procedure that does not require any surgical incisions or radiation exposure. Ultrasound waves are focused on a brain area measuring just a few millimeters and bundled with pinpoint accuracy. This generates heat in the target area, which destroys the diseased nerve cells. Magnetic resonance imaging enables precise control of the procedure and real-time monitoring. Patients benefit from a quick recovery.
